pest resistance and availability. Use the performance data for the research site or conditions most similar to your ranch or farm. For irrigated production in short (3 to 5 years) rotations, there are many high-yielding varieties available. For long-term stands on dryland, few varieties have forage yields superior to Ladak resistant varieties. Race 2 is more virulent. Many alfalfa varieties are resistant to race 1, but few are resistant to race 2. Anthracnose Definition: a serious stem and crown rot disease, which can kill individual plants and cause rapid stand decline. Primary Occurrence: Moderate levels across U.S., severe in .

This National Alfalfa & Forage Alliance publication is intended for use by Extension and agri-business personnel to satisfy a need for information on characteristics of certified-eligible alfalfa varieties. NAFA updates this publication annually. Alfalfa Variety Ratings Winter Survival, Fall Dormancy & Pest Resistance Ratings for Alfalfa Varieties. Yield results for alfalfa entries cur-rently tested in Minnesota yield trials ( to seeding years) are listed in Tables 1 through 4; alfalfa entry, seed marketers, and matching web sites are provided in Table 5. Disease resistance information for alfalfa en-tries is available on the web at www. Winterhardiness and Winter.

A third reason for the lower rate of progress in increasing yield may be that alfalfa is an auto-tetraploid (2n=4x=32). The breeding methods that have been effective with diploid crop species are not as effective when applied to alfalfa. Pest Resistance: Increased levels of pest resistance have been a major success of alfalfa breeding. Alfalfa is a major forage crop grown in the United States and Wyoming, and accounts for the fourth largest commodity. In alfalfa grown on million acres produced 52 million tons of hay with Western states accounting for approximately 40% of total production. Alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica) is the most destructive insect pest of alfalfa in the United States.

More than alfalfa varieties (cultivars) are commercially available within North America. Most of these are listed in an annually-updated bulletin from the National Alfalfa Alliance () that rates fall dormancy and pest resistance levels and lists seed marketers.

Descriptive information for these varieties. The root soak field evaluation method is most effective in determining resistance in alfalfa. However a combination of root soak and cotyledon wounding has proved effective for screening large numbers of seedlings in the greenhouse (1,2,3,5).

Yield potential of alfalfa varieties are continually evaluated in research trials at University of Minnesota Research and Outreach Centers and on cooperat-ing farmers’ fields.

The trials are con-ducted using recommended fertility and pest control practices to optimize alfalfa yield and persistence. Test locations are in alfalfa production. *Controlled environment evaluations can be more severe than field evaluations (check varieties may have a lower resistance when compared to field results) SOURCE OF INOCULUM AND EXPERTISE Rhodes Plant Pathology Kottmann Hall Ohio State Univ.

I Coffey Road Columbus, OH REFERENCES. Recently released alfalfa varieties often express high levels of resistance to many diseases, insects and nematodes. However, until recently breeders were unsuccessful in incorporating resistance to potato leafhopper (PLH), a key alfalfa insect pest.

A single set of check cultivars representing fall dormancy classes (FDC) 1 to 11are designated. These check cultivars have been selected to maintain the intended relationship between the original set of nine check cultivars (Standard Tests, March ) and to have minimal variation across environments.

even in highly resistant varieties. See Chapter 5 (“Choosing an Alfalfa Variety”) for a complete discussion of pest resistance. Resistance is also discussed in sections on individual pests. A list of alfalfa varieties and the pests they are resistant to, including insects, diseases, and nematodes, is available from the National.

Brown Root Rot (BRR) had been reported to cause yield and stand losses in Canada. It was first detected in the U.S. in an alfalfa field in Wyoming in the spring of Development of a standardized screening technique for use by private breeders will result in the eventual development and release of BRR-resistant varieties adapted for use in the USA Use of these resistant varieties will.

Management options: Moderate and resistant varieties are available for common leaf spot and downy mildew; low to moderate for Stemphylium.

For all leaf spots, Do not delay harvest. Harvesting the diseased tissue before leaf drop will help 1. remove inoculum from the field, 2. remove the younger, more susceptible leaves, and 3. open up the canopy to reducing the relative humidity and. on characteristics of certified-eligible alfalfa varieties.

The mechanisms for pest resistance in alfalfa are complex given the level of genetic variation within and among varieties. In alfalfa roots, resistant varieties may be elevated in certain defenses compared to susceptible varieties, but other defense indicators such as chitinase mRNAs were similar between resistant and susceptible varieties.Oklahoma Alfalfa Variety Testing What this tells me is Oklahoma has little or no problem insect or disease problems that are countered by resistance.

Possibly every 20 or 30 years the potato leaf hopper is a problem. The alfalfa weevil does not have a variety that can be countered by plant resistance.

Possibly you should look at OK 49 or OK species to feeding by adult alfalfa weevils (Hypera postica). Environ. Entomol. Resistance of glandular-haired Medicago species to oviposition by alfalfa weevils (Hypera postica).
